Campaign for a SF Guaranteed Care Income: Single Mothers and Domestic Workers Press for a Humane and Effective Response to the Crisis of Poverty and Criminalization (A Bilingual Workshop)

A successful Guaranteed Care Income pilot in San Francisco in 2024, initiated by In Defense of Prostitute Women's Safety with Global Women's Strike (GWS) and Women of Color/GWS, provided cash payments in recognition of mothers' caregiving work and is now the basis for a campaign for a citywide Guaranteed Care Income for low-income single mothers, including immigrant mothers. The campaign responds to a growing crisis in which women, especially single mothers—often women of color—are being driven into low-wage jobs or made more vulnerable to criminalization, ICE raids, child welfare investigations, and separation from their children. Tech billionaires and wealthy business interests are lobbying to further criminalize poverty and divert public money to law enforcement.
